Walt Disney World · Bay Lake, Florida
The most-visited theme park on earth, and still the one built for kids first.
Magic Kingdom opened on October 1 1971 and remains the most-visited theme park in the world. It is the smallest of Walt Disney World's four parks at roughly 107 acres, and it holds more attractions than any of them — six lands laid out in a hub-and-spoke pattern around Cinderella Castle, with Main Street U.S.A. running from the entrance to the hub and five themed lands fanning out from there.
The park's defining characteristic is that it was designed for children and never retrofitted for anyone else. Three of its four coasters have height requirements of 38 inches or lower, the majority of its rides have no height requirement at all, and its headliners are dark rides and boat rides rather than thrill machines. If you are traveling with anyone under seven, this is the park where they will do the most and wait the least relative to what they can access. If you are a group of adults chasing big coasters, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios will do more for you.
Two things have changed the geography of the park recently. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened on May 3 2026 with its height requirement reduced to 38 inches, which brings it in line with Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and opens it to a lot of children who missed it on a previous trip. Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin also reopened in 2026 following an update to its scenes and target systems.
The larger change is a loss. Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Belle Riverboat all closed permanently in 2025 to make room for the announced Piston Peak National Park expansion of Frontierland and a separate Villains Land. The waterway is being filled in. That means construction walls along the western edges of Frontierland and Liberty Square, intermittent construction noise during the day, and the disappearance of the quiet riverside benches that used to be the best free rest area in the park. Disney has said Piston Peak arrives later this decade and has given no opening date at all for Villains Land — treat any specific year you see attached to either as speculation.
Plan on a long day. Magic Kingdom runs the longest operating hours of the four Florida parks, has the highest attraction count, and finishes with a fireworks show that most people stay for. Ten to twelve hours on your feet is normal here, and the parks-worth-of-walking is real even though the map looks small.

Food
Our highest-priority items in Magic Kingdom. Mark them on the tracker and they save to your device.
Cheshire Cafe
A long twisted puff pastry striped in pink and purple, filled with cream cheese icing, sold from a tiny window beside the Mad Tea Party.
Our take: The best sleeper snack at Magic Kingdom. Properly laminated pastry, filling that is not sickly, and a line that is almost never more than two deep. Buy it in the morning while it is still crisp.
Sunshine Tree Terrace
Frozen orange juice swirled with vanilla soft-serve at a window near the Adventureland bridge. Sharper and more citrus-forward than a Dole Whip.
Our take: The frozen treat regulars actually order, and the line is a fifth of Aloha Isle's for something arguably better. Ask for the orange on its own if you need dairy-free.
Pineapple soft-serve, dairy-free and gluten-free, served in a cup from a window across from the Enchanted Tiki Room. Tart rather than sweet, and it holds its texture in heat better than ice cream does.
Our take: Lives up to the hype and costs less than most park desserts. Mobile order it — the walk-up line is regularly twenty-five minutes for a soft-serve, which is not worth it.
Fried chicken pressed between two waffle halves with a sweet chili sauce and slaw, from the window at the Liberty Square bridge.
Our take: One of the three best things you can eat at Magic Kingdom and it costs less than a quick-service burger. Eat it on the covered patio with the castle view rather than walking with it.
A cinnamon roll roughly the size of two fists, served warm and glazed rather than iced, from the tavern at the back of Fantasyland.
Our take: One of the best baked goods on Walt Disney World property and priced as a single snack. Buy one for three people and eat it at opening, when the batch is fresh rather than warmer-held.
Seasoned beef with tortillas, rice and beans, finished at the free self-serve toppings bar with peppers, onions, cheese sauce, salsa and jalapenos.
Our take: Ordinary on the tray and good once you build it. Order the base platter rather than the loaded version and use the toppings bar, which is unlimited and free.
TRON Lightcycle / Run and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are the two Lightning Lane Single Pass attractions here, and this is the only Walt Disney World park where you may hold two at the same time. Buying both removes the two worst standby waits in the park in one move, and it is the single most effective purchase available. As of July 2026 Single Pass runs roughly $12 to $25 per ride.
The shops on both sides of Main Street are interconnected, so you can travel almost the whole length of the street indoors in air conditioning. On the east side, an arcade behind the buildings runs from near Casey's Corner back toward Town Square, and it is the fastest exit from the park after fireworks while the sidewalk is gridlocked.
It takes about thirty-five minutes to complete its route from Frontierland to Town Square, and during that time Fantasyland and Tomorrowland waits fall sharply. If you are not watching, this is the best hour of the day to ride Peter Pan's Flight and the Haunted Mansion. If you are watching, do it from the Frontierland end where it steps off — same show, twenty-five minutes less waiting, actual shade.
At close, the monorail ramp backs up and the ferry does not, because each ferry moves around six hundred people per sailing. The ferry usually gets you to the Ticket and Transportation Center twenty minutes faster despite the slower crossing, and the upper deck gives you the tail of the fireworks over open water on the way.
The Hall of Presidents (23 minutes), Carousel of Progress (21), Mickey's PhilharMagic (12), Country Bear Musical Jamboree (11) and the Enchanted Tiki Room (10) are all air conditioned, all seated, and all functionally walk-on. Chaining two together in the 1-to-3 p.m. window is what separates people who last until fireworks from people who leave at four.
Get in line for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, TRON or Space Mountain in the final five minutes before official close. The posted wait at that hour is almost always inflated relative to the real one, because the queue stops taking new guests and simply drains.
The pilot's cabin seats four or five guests and is available on request at the platform gate, first come first served. On a slow morning the answer is often yes. Almost nobody knows to ask, which is exactly why it is usually free.
One veteran visiting the park each day is chosen as the honorary Veteran of the Day and walks with the color guard during the late-afternoon flag ceremony in Town Square. You volunteer at City Hall first thing in the morning, it costs nothing, and it is not advertised anywhere.
Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen has the best food at Magic Kingdom and is frequently available same day, because its menu is more adventurous than guests expect from a Disney park. Be Our Guest costs more than twice as much, requires a sixty-day booking sprint, and sells you a room rather than a meal.
Any attraction with a height requirement offers Rider Switch, including Tomorrowland Speedway at 32 inches, and several without one offer it too — Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion both do. It lets one adult wait with a child who cannot or will not ride, then ride with a short wait afterward without queuing twice.
Standard parking is at the Ticket and Transportation Center, not at the park gate, with a per-day charge for day guests and complimentary parking for Disney resort guests. From the parking lot you take a tram to the TTC, then a monorail or ferry across Seven Seas Lagoon to the park entrance — budget twenty to thirty minutes each way for that transfer, and more at close.
Security screening happens before the ticket turnstiles at the main entrance. Arrive at least forty-five minutes before official opening if you intend to rope drop — Disney routinely admits guests to Main Street ahead of the posted time, and the entry tunnels open onto the street well before the lands do. Bag check moves faster on the far left and far right lanes than in the center.
One long day covers the headliners if you plan it and arrive at rope drop. A day and a half is the honest recommendation, especially with children under seven, because it lets you take a genuine mid-afternoon break and still see everything. Two days is comfortable rather than necessary.
48 inches, for TRON Lightcycle / Run. The full ladder is 32 inches for Tomorrowland Speedway (54 to drive alone), 35 for The Barnstormer, 38 for both Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, 40 for Tiana's Bayou Adventure, 44 for Space Mountain and 48 for TRON. Seven of the park's attractions have a height requirement; the rest do not.
TRON Lightcycle / Run and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Everything else on Lightning Lane here is Multi Pass, including Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Tiana's Bayou Adventure, the Haunted Mansion and Peter Pan's Flight. Magic Kingdom is the only Walt Disney World park where a guest may hold two Single Passes at once.
No. TRON and Tiana's Bayou Adventure both used virtual queues after opening and both dropped them. As of mid-2026 no attraction at Walt Disney World permanently uses a virtual queue — they appear only temporarily for new ride openings.
Both closed permanently in 2025, along with Rivers of America itself. The waterway is being filled in for the announced Piston Peak National Park expansion of Frontierland and a separate Villains Land. Disney has said Piston Peak arrives later this decade and has announced no date for Villains Land beyond vertical construction beginning in 2026. Neither attraction will return.
Space Mountain, for most people, and it achieves that with modest speed and small drops — you ride in near-total darkness with no visible track, so nothing is anticipated. TRON is much faster but smoother and less frightening. Among rides with no height requirement, Pirates of the Caribbean surprises the most families, because of its dark drop and burning-town scenes.
Anywhere in front of Cinderella Castle between the Partners statue and the top of Main Street, slightly off the center line — that range gives you readable castle projections plus the street speakers carrying the score. Behind the castle in Fantasyland you get excellent shells and no story, and the park empties there for twenty minutes afterward, which is a legitimate ride strategy.
Columbia Harbour House in Liberty Square, on food quality and on the second-floor seating that most guests never find. Sleepy Hollow's sweet-and-spicy chicken waffle sandwich is the single best item in the park at any price. Pecos Bill is the best value for a big group because of the free unlimited toppings bar.
Only at a handful of table-service restaurants — Be Our Guest, Cinderella's Royal Table, Liberty Tree Tavern, Skipper Canteen and Tony's Town Square among them. There is no alcohol at quick service, no bar and no walk-up drinks. If a drinking day is what you want, EPCOT is the park for it.
There is no parking lot at the gate. Driving means parking at the Ticket and Transportation Center and taking the monorail or ferry across Seven Seas Lagoon, adding twenty to thirty minutes each way. Disney resort buses and rideshare drop-offs both go directly to the park entrance, as does the Resort monorail line from the Contemporary, Grand Floridian and Polynesian.
It is the best park at Walt Disney World for children under seven, without much competition. The majority of its attractions have no height requirement, its coasters start at 35 inches, and Storybook Circus has a free splash pad plus an air-conditioned indoor play tent built into the Dumbo queue with a pager system so you keep your place in line while they play.
The first ninety minutes after opening and the last two hours before close are the two low-wait windows, and the second one is far more pleasant. If you can only pick one, evenings win — the lighting is better, the heat is gone, and the park empties noticeably in the twenty minutes after fireworks while it is still open.
