What it is
Big Thunder is a family coaster dressed up as a mining disaster. There are no inversions, no steep drops and a top speed around thirty miles per hour, but the track is laid out to whip you sideways through banked curves inside a hand-sculpted red rock formation stretching almost two hundred feet across Frontierland. The thrill is entirely lateral.
It reopened on May 3 2026 after a long refurbishment, and the important change for families is the height requirement: it dropped from 40 inches to 38, which puts it in reach of a lot of four- and five-year-olds who missed it by an inch on a previous trip. That also makes it the same requirement as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, so a child who clears one clears both.
The rockwork is the underrated part. Disney's designers built the mountain around real antique mining equipment — an ore-crushing stamp mill, drilling rigs and hand tools bought from working mines — and the queue and ride path are laid out so you pass through the machinery rather than around it. Riding at night, when the mountain is lit from below and you cannot see the tracks ahead, is a genuinely different experience from riding at noon.
What riding it is actually like
Board a low mine car with a lap bar and no shoulder restraint. Seating is two per row and the cars are narrow — large adults are comfortable but shoulder-to-shoulder. The first lift hill climbs into a dark cavern with bats and dripping water, then the train releases into a fast right-hand curve through a slot canyon.
The layout runs three lift hills and three descending sections, each one faster than the last. The second act crosses over open water and past the desert scenery with the goats and the dynamite shack; the third is the strongest, dropping into a tunnel where a rockslide effect rumbles overhead and the track snaps back and forth in near-darkness. Nothing here produces sustained airtime — the sensation is being thrown against the side of the car.
Sit in the back row. It is the single biggest variable on this ride: the rear cars get whipped through every curve and over every crest with noticeably more force, and the difference between row one and the last row is close to the difference between a kiddie coaster and a real one. Front row gives you the best view of the scenery and a much tamer ride.
Is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad scary?
A runaway mine train with no inversions and no big drops, but a lot of lateral snap. The three lift hills lead into short dark tunnels, and the final section includes a rockslide effect with rumbling and falling-rock illusions in low light. Most eight-year-olds love it. The kids who struggle are the ones bothered by being thrown side to side, not by height or speed.
Scores are editorial, on a 1–5 scale, judged against what frightens a typical four- to seven-year-old rather than an adult.

You must transfer from a wheelchair or ECV and step down into a low, narrow train car with a lap bar. There is a test seat near the entrance. The queue includes stairs with a marked accessible bypass — ask at the entrance rather than discovering it partway up.
Tips that actually help
- Back row for intensity, front row for scenery. Ask for the back and expect to wait one extra train cycle — it is worth it.
- Ride it after dark. The mountain is lit from within, you cannot see the next curve coming, and the whole thing feels roughly one notch faster than it does at noon.
- The height requirement is 38 inches as of May 2026, down from 40. If your child was measured on a trip before that, measure again — a lot of families do not know it changed.
- This is the correct rope-drop target if you have small kids and are skipping TRON. It is closer to the entrance than Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and the line builds more slowly in the first hour.
- Loose items go in the small floor bin at your feet or in a pocket that zips. There are no lockers, the lateral forces are real, and phones do come out of laps here more than on any other Magic Kingdom coaster.
- The single most reliable low-wait window is during the afternoon parade, when the parade route cuts Frontierland in half and casual traffic stops flowing toward the mountain.
Timing
- Best time to ride
- The first hour after opening, during the afternoon parade, or the last hour of the night.
- Typical wait
- 30 to 70 minutes through the middle of the day; 10 to 20 at rope drop and near close.

- Lightning Lane Multi Pass
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: common questions
What is the height requirement for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad?
38 inches, reduced from 40 inches when the attraction reopened on May 3 2026. Guests are measured with shoes on against a fixed stick, and borderline children get a colored wristband so they are not re-measured at the boarding gate.
Is Big Thunder Mountain scary?
It is the mildest of Magic Kingdom's three coasters. No inversions, no steep drops, top speed around thirty miles per hour. What it does have is sharp lateral movement and a few short dark tunnels. Children who are nervous about roller coasters usually do better here than on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, which has a stronger final drop.
Which seat is best on Big Thunder Mountain?
The back row, without much argument. The rear cars are whipped through the curves with significantly more force. If you want to look at the rockwork and the desert scenery instead, take the front, which rides noticeably smoother.
Is Big Thunder Mountain on Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Single Pass?
Multi Pass. Only TRON Lightcycle / Run and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are Single Pass at Magic Kingdom, and Magic Kingdom is the only Walt Disney World park where you can hold two Single Passes at once.
Can you ride Big Thunder Mountain while pregnant?
No. Disney lists it among the attractions expectant mothers should not ride, because of the sudden lateral forces and jolting. Rider Switch is available so both adults can ride in turn without waiting twice.
