Disney California Adventure is the park people used to skip. It opened on February 8 2001 across the esplanade from Disneyland, built cheaply, themed thinly, and organized around the idea that visitors to California wanted to look at a stylized version of California. The reception was brutal, attendance was poor, and by the middle of the decade Disney had committed roughly a billion dollars to fixing it.

That fix is what you visit today. Cars Land, Buena Vista Street, Pixar Pier, Avengers Campus and San Fransokyo Square all arrived after 2012, each replacing something that had failed. The park still carries some of the original bones — the pier layout around Paradise Bay, the mountain at the north end, the airfield — but the experience is unrecognizable from what opened. It is now a genuinely good park with one structural weakness: it is short on rides, and shorter still on rides for children under 40 inches.

What it does better than any of the other five Disney parks in the United States is food and drink. Carthay Circle is the only restaurant inside a Disney gate in America that would earn a second visit on its own merits. Lamplight Lounge, the Alfresco Tasting Terrace, the Pym Tasting Lab and the waterfront bar in San Fransokyo Square give the park a real drinking culture. The corn dog, the fried biscuits, the Cookie Num Num and the Chili Cone Queso are all better than they need to be. If you plan a day here around eating rather than around ride count, you will have a better time.

The ride roster is top-heavy and excellent at the top. Radiator Springs Racers is the best attraction at the Disneyland Resort. Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is the best thrill ride. Soarin', Incredicoaster, Grizzly River Run, Toy Story Midway Mania and WEB SLINGERS fill out a headliner tier that most parks would be pleased with. Below that the roster thins fast into flat rides and spinners, several of which carry 40-inch or 42-inch requirements that catch families out.

Two things are changing. Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! closed in early 2026 and its show building is being turned over to a Disney Avatar project that remains in early development with no announced date. The Avengers Campus expansion — Avengers Infinity Defense plus Stark Flight Lab — is under construction, and the 2027 to 2028 window widely attached to it is a projection rather than anything Disney has stated. Plan the park you can walk into today.

Food

What to eat here

Our highest-priority items in Disney California Adventure. Mark them on the tracker and they save to your device.

Carthay Circle Fried Biscuits

Carthay Circle Lounge

$16.99

Fried biscuit dough filled with white cheddar, bacon and jalapeño, served hot with a dipping sauce.

Our take: The best savory thing at either Disneyland Resort park. Order it in the downstairs lounge, where you do not need a reservation to get it.

Do not leave without it Savory

Chili Cone Queso

Cozy Cone Motel

$11.49

Beef chili and queso served inside a cone-shaped bread bowl, so the container is also the last few bites.

Our take: The rare photogenic park snack that is actually good. The bread holds up, the chili is properly seasoned, and it eats cleanly while walking to Radiator Springs Racers.

Do not leave without it Savory Walkable

Hand-Dipped Corn Dog

Corn Dog Castle

$11.29

A sausage dipped to order in a thick sweet cornmeal batter and dropped into the fryer while you watch, served scalding on a stick with a bag of chips.

Our take: The best single item at this park and one of the best at the resort. Eleven dollars for a corn dog sounds absurd until you eat it; the batter alone justifies it.

Do not leave without it Savory Walkable

Lobster Nachos

Lamplight Lounge

$28.99

A large platter of house chips loaded with lobster, cheese sauce, pickled vegetables and herbs, built for a table rather than a person.

Our take: Expensive and worth it if three or four of you split it. There is real lobster on it, which is not something you can say about most theme-park seafood.

Do not leave without it Savory

Bacon Cheeseburger

Smokejumpers Grill

$17.99

A cooked-to-order burger with bacon and cheese, finished at a free self-serve toppings bar with grilled onions, sauces and peppers.

Our take: The best burger at either Disneyland Resort park, largely because of the toppings bar most guests walk straight past. Use it.

Things worth knowing before you go

The single rider lines here are the best value in Anaheim

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, Radiator Springs Racers, Incredicoaster and Toy Story Midway Mania all run single rider queues, and all four routinely cut posted waits by 60 to 75 percent. Mission: BREAKOUT! randomizes its drop sequence and Racers randomizes its pit-stop scene, so riding apart from your group costs you nothing but company.

Ask for row B, center on Soarin'

Ask at the row-assignment podium, not in the main queue. Row B lifts highest, so no other row's dangling feet appear at the bottom of your field of view, and the center seats sit at the dome's optical sweet spot where the image does not warp. Cast members will accommodate it and will tell you if the wait is long.

Pixar Pal-A-Round has two completely different rides in it

The swinging gondolas slide along interior rails and drop repeatedly for nine minutes. The non-swinging gondolas do not move at all. They are separate queues, the signage is easy to miss, and there is no height requirement on either — which is exactly how families end up on the wrong one.

Plan around shade, not around wait times

Cars Land, Avengers Campus and Pixar Pier have essentially none. Grizzly Peak, Paradise Gardens Park and the Hollywood Land theaters have plenty. Sequencing your day so the unshaded lands happen before 11am and after 5pm will change your experience more than any Lightning Lane purchase.

The nighttime show is the best hour to ride

When the crowd migrates to Paradise Bay, Pixar Pier, Cars Land and Hollywood Land empty. Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind, Jessie's Critter Carousel, Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters and the character greetings all become walk-ups. If you have seen the show before, this is the most productive 25 minutes of the day.

Buy the Racers Single Pass, skip the rest

Radiator Springs Racers is Lightning Lane Single Pass, which is bought per ride rather than covered by Multi Pass. As of July 2026 it is the one attraction here where the standby wait is consistently punishing enough to justify paying, and the ride is good enough to be worth it. Check the app the morning of your visit — prices move with demand.

Height requirements here are higher than they look

Jumpin' Jellyfish, Silly Symphony Swings and Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind all require 40 inches for rides that are genuinely gentle, and Golden Zephyr requires 42. If you are traveling with a child between 36 and 40 inches, this park has far less for them than Disneyland Park does, and it is worth knowing that before you buy the ticket.

Eat here rather than across the esplanade

This is the better food park by a wide margin. Carthay Circle, Lamplight Lounge, the corn dog at Corn Dog Castle, the Cookie Num Num, the fried biscuits and the Chili Cone Queso have no equivalent at Disneyland Park. If you are hopping between parks, do your riding there and your eating here.

The Alfresco Tasting Terrace exists and nobody finds it

There is a staircase off the walkway near Wine Country Trattoria leading to a covered balcony wine bar one level above the crowd. It is the quietest adult space at the resort, it serves the restaurant's food, and it is frequently half empty on days when the ground below is impassable. Look for the stairs.

Redwood Creek is the best free hour in the park

A full adventure playground with climbing nets, rope bridges, a cave, log slides and a zip line, under real trees, with no queue and no charge. If you are traveling with children aged five to twelve, an hour here will do more for the rest of your day than any ride will. It also closes before the park does, so do not save it.

Getting there

Parking

The Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking structures on the west side of the resort are the main option, with trams running to the esplanade between the two parks. Toy Story parking on Harbor Boulevard uses buses instead and is generally quieter to exit. Expect roughly $35 to $40 per car per day as of July 2026, with preferred parking closer to the trams costing more. The walk or tram ride from Mickey & Friends adds 20 to 30 minutes to your arrival, so factor it into a rope-drop plan.

At the entrance

Disney California Adventure's gate faces Disneyland Park's across a shared esplanade, so security screening happens once for both. The Grand Californian Hotel has its own entrance directly into the park, which is the fastest way in for guests staying there. Bag check queues on the Harbor Boulevard side move faster than those on the parking-structure side on most mornings, so if you are walking in from a hotel, aim for the eastern screening lanes.

How to get here

  • Parking trams from the Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals structures to the resort esplanade, running from before park opening until after close
  • Buses from the Toy Story parking area on Harbor Boulevard
  • Walking from the three Disneyland Resort hotels, all of which are within 10 to 15 minutes of the esplanade; the Grand Californian has a dedicated entrance directly into Disney California Adventure
  • Anaheim Resort Transportation buses from most Good Neighbor hotels in the surrounding area
  • Rideshare drop-off at the designated zone on Harbor Boulevard, a 10-minute walk from the esplanade
  • Metrolink and Amtrak to Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, with a short bus or rideshare connection to the resort

Disney California Adventure questions, answered

Is Disney California Adventure worth a full day?

Yes, but it is genuinely a one-day park, which Disneyland Park is not. With an early arrival you can do every headliner, eat a real meal and see the nighttime show in a single day. If you only have one day at the whole resort, most first-timers should choose Disneyland Park; if you have two or more, this park earns its own day rather than a few leftover hours.

What is the best ride at Disney California Adventure?

Radiator Springs Racers, and it is not close. It combines a slow, beautifully built dark ride through Radiator Springs with a fast outdoor race across the rockwork, and both halves are excellent. Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is the best thrill ride and Soarin' Around the World is the best simulator.

What are the height requirements at this park?

Incredicoaster is 48 inches, the tallest here. Goofy's Sky School, Grizzly River Run, Golden Zephyr and the Redwood Creek zip line are 42 inches. Radiator Springs Racers, Mission: BREAKOUT!, Soarin', Jumpin' Jellyfish, Silly Symphony Swings and Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind are 40 inches. Mater's Junkyard Jamboree and Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters are 32 inches. Thirteen attractions have a requirement in total.

Is this park good for toddlers?

Less than you would hope. Closing a bug's land in 2018 removed five rides scaled for the under-40-inch crowd, and nothing replaced them. What remains is The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure, Toy Story Midway Mania, Jessie's Critter Carousel, WEB SLINGERS, Pixar Pal-A-Round, the Red Car Trolley and the Disney Junior show — all with no height requirement. That is a half day, not a full one.

How does Lightning Lane work at Disneyland Resort?

As of July 2026, Multi Pass starts around $34 per person per day and covers 15 or more attractions across both parks, with Disneyland Resort hotel guests receiving one bonus Multi Pass per person per stay since January 2026. Single Pass is bought per ride for a few headliners, including Radiator Springs Racers here. Premier Pass covers both parks in a single purchase, runs roughly $300 to $400 depending on date, is purchasable up to 7 days ahead in the app, and sells out. Prices are dynamic — check the app on the day.

Does anything here use a virtual queue?

No. As of mid-2026 no attraction at either Disneyland Resort park permanently uses a virtual queue. They now appear only temporarily for brand-new ride openings. If a guide tells you to set an alarm for a boarding group at this park, it is out of date.

What happened to Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue?

It closed permanently in early 2026 so its show building could be turned over to a Disney Avatar project. The Avatar development is in early stages and Disney has not announced an opening date or a specific attraction lineup. Hollywood Land now has no ride at all, which is worth knowing before you plan time there.

When does the Avengers Campus expansion open?

Disney has not said. The expansion — Avengers Infinity Defense plus Stark Flight Lab — is under construction, and the 2027 to 2028 window you will see quoted is a projection based on construction pace rather than a Disney-stated date. Do not plan a trip around it, and treat any confident date you encounter with suspicion.

Where is the best place to watch the nighttime show?

The center-back of the main terraced viewing area on Paradise Bay. You get the full width of the water screens and stay out of the mist. The front rail looks appealing and is a mistake — it cuts off the top of the projections and you will be damp for the rest of the night. Arrive 45 to 90 minutes early for a good free spot, or use a Lightning Lane Multi Pass reservation and arrive 20 minutes before.

Is the food really better than at Disneyland Park?

Yes, clearly. Carthay Circle is the best restaurant inside any Disney gate in America, Lamplight Lounge is the best gastropub, and the park has four genuinely good bars against Disneyland Park's much thinner drinking options. The corn dog at Corn Dog Castle, the Jack-Jack Cookie Num Num, the Carthay fried biscuits and the Chili Cone Queso have no equivalents across the esplanade.

Can I drink alcohol at Disney California Adventure?

Yes, and this is the park to do it in. Alcohol is served throughout, which was true here long before Disneyland Park allowed it in limited locations. The Alfresco Tasting Terrace has the best wine list, the Pym Tasting Lab has the best beer, and Carthay Circle Lounge makes the best cocktails at the resort.

How early should I arrive?

Thirty minutes before the posted opening time, at the turnstiles rather than in the parking structure. The first forty minutes of the day are worth roughly two hours later on, and the difference is most dramatic at Radiator Springs Racers, which goes from a 20-minute wait to a 90-minute one within the first hour.
