Hollywood Land at California Adventure

Hollywood Land opened with the park in 2001 as the Hollywood Pictures Backlot and was renamed in 2012. It has been steadily hollowed out: the Tower of Terror became part of Avengers Campus, a bug's land next door became Avengers Campus outright, and Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! closed in early 2026 for the Avatar project.

What remains is a land of theaters and the Disney Animation building. The Hyperion Theater stages large-scale limited-run productions. Mickey's PhilharMagic runs on a fast cycle. The Disney Junior show plays to preschoolers all day. Animation Academy teaches you to draw a character in twenty-five minutes, and Disney has said The Magic of Disney Animation returns to that building in September 2026 — a Disney-stated month rather than a verified opening.

That leaves Hollywood Land with no ride at all, which is the single most important planning fact about it. It is the emptiest walking territory in the park, which makes it excellent for shade, seating and short theater waits, and useless if you are counting attractions.

The Avatar project is in early development with no announced opening date, and the construction footprint sits behind the old Monsters, Inc. show building. Expect walls and altered walking routes in this corner for years.

Hollywood Land tips

This land has no ride. Budget it as theater time, not queue time, and it stops being disappointing.
Award Wieners has the most reliably available shaded seating in the park at lunchtime — use it even if you bought food elsewhere.
Check the Animation building's posted class schedule when you first pass it in the morning; the character taught at Animation Academy differs by session.
The Schmoozies! window is the shortest cold-drink line in the park between 1pm and 4pm precisely because nobody walks through here any more.

Attractions in Hollywood Land

Animation Academy is a live class inside the Disney Animation building, and it is the most underrated hour in the park. A real instructor stands at a lit drawing desk projected onto a screen and takes the room through constructing a single character step by step, from basic shapes to final line. You get paper, a pencil, and a hard surface. You keep the drawing.

Tips for Animation Academy

Check the posted schedule when you first walk into the Animation building in the morning, then plan your afternoon around a specific session — the character taught differs by class and the good ones fill up.
Ask an instructor which class of the day is teaching the hardest character. Late-afternoon sessions frequently get the more ambitious ones because the crowd skews older.
Take the paper home flat. The gift shops sell tube mailers, but a park map folded around the drawing works and costs nothing.
Repeat visitors: ask the instructor what they worked on. Many rotate in from production work, and the answers are genuinely interesting if you catch them between sessions.

Character Close-Up

Character Close-Up is the greeting space off the main hall of the Disney Animation building. The lineup rotates and is posted on the app; over the years it has hosted characters from Frozen, Moana, Encanto and other animated features, generally two at a time in separate rooms.

Tips for Character Close-Up

Check the app's character list before walking over. The lineup changes and the building has more than one greeting room active at a time.
The queue is shortest immediately after a nighttime show ends in the last thirty minutes of operation, when everyone else is walking toward the exit.
Bring a permanent marker rather than the pen that comes with an autograph book. Costumed characters with gloved hands manage a fat marker far better.
If your child is nervous, do this greeting before any outdoor one. The controlled indoor setting is a much gentler first encounter.

Disney Junior Dream Factory

A 20-minute sing-and-dance show for preschoolers, staged indoors with puppet characters from the Disney Junior lineup.

The Disney Theater in Hollywood Land has held some version of a Disney Junior show since the park's early years, and the current production is Disney Junior Dream Factory. The framing is a workshop where a host and a rotating cast of Disney Junior characters build things — songs, dances, a party — with the audience doing the work alongside them.

Tips for Disney Junior Dream Factory

Arrive fifteen minutes before showtime for the first performance of the day and you will walk straight in; later shows can fill and turn people away.
The back bench is the parent's seat. You can see over every head, your bag is off the floor, and you are two steps from the exit if it goes badly.
There is no stroller parking inside — leave it in the marked area outside and take valuables with you.
Repeat visitors should note that the character roster is refreshed periodically to track the current Disney Junior slate, so a show you saw two years ago is unlikely to be the same one now.

Mickey's PhilharMagic

A 3D film in which Donald Duck loses Mickey's magic hat and falls through a run of Disney musical numbers.

PhilharMagic is a 12-minute 3D feature built around Donald Duck being catastrophically bad at his job. He commandeers a conductor's hat, sets off a chain of events, and is flung through set pieces built on Disney animated musical sequences before being deposited, humiliated, back where he started.

Tips for Mickey's PhilharMagic

Sit center, two-thirds back. Front rows put the 3D effects uncomfortably close and the side sections lose the depth entirely.
This is the best rainy-day and heat-of-the-day attraction in the park's north half. The house is huge and the wait almost never exceeds one show cycle.
Kids under four often do better without the glasses. The image still reads and the effects still land, and it avoids the fight.
Hang back for the final beat after the film ends — the joke is placed behind the seating, not on the screen.

Hyperion Theater

The park's 2,000-seat proscenium theater, home to limited-run Broadway-scale stage productions that change every few years.

The Hyperion is a real theater — a full fly tower, an orchestra pit, a balcony, and around two thousand seats. It has housed a series of large-scale productions since the park opened in 2001, each running for a period of years before being retired and replaced.

Tips for Hyperion Theater

Confirm what is playing on the day you go. There are stretches when the theater is dark between productions and no amount of planning fixes that.
Queue thirty minutes before curtain for a center-orchestra seat; twenty minutes gets you the sides.
The balcony line is usually shorter than the orchestra line and often gives you the better view of large ensemble numbers.
This theater is the single best air-conditioned escape in the park, but you are committing 35 to 55 minutes — do not start the queue if your nighttime show viewing spot matters to you.
