What it is
You wear 3D glasses, sit in a car with a spring-loaded shooter, and rotate between five screens playing carnival midway games: throwing rings at aliens, cracking plates, popping balloons with darts, and so on. Your score displays on the dashboard next to your partner's, and that is the entire hook. It opened in 2008 and it works as well now as it did then.
The ride is genuinely skill-based, which almost nothing else at Walt Disney World is. Learning where the high-value targets hide is the difference between a score of 90,000 and a score of 250,000, and people who ride it repeatedly get dramatically better at it.
It is also one of the few attractions at this park with no height requirement, indoors, air conditioned, and suitable for grandparents and toddlers in the same vehicle. That combination is why it holds a long line all day despite being nearly twenty years old.
What riding it is actually like
The queue is themed as an oversized toy box, with a large animatronic ringmaster near the boarding area. Standby routes you through more of it than Lightning Lane does, and there are hidden gags in the boxes worth looking at.
In the car, pull the string quickly and repeatedly rather than aiming carefully. Volume beats precision on most screens, with two exceptions: the dart-and-balloon screen rewards hitting specific balloons that open into higher-value targets, and the plate-smashing screen has a large center target that pays far more than the plates around it.
Cars seat four, in pairs back to back. Your score is compared against the person beside you, not the pair behind. If you want a fair contest, seat the two competitive people together.
Is Toy Story Midway Mania! scary?
Bright, indoors, slow, and structured as a carnival. There is nothing frightening in it. The vehicles rotate between screens, which occasionally bothers guests prone to motion sickness, but children are essentially never scared here.
Scores are editorial, on a 1–5 scale, judged against what frightens a typical four- to seven-year-old rather than an adult.

There are wheelchair-accessible vehicles that load without transferring, and the shooter is mounted so it can be used from a seated position. Guests with limited grip strength can ask for a modified spring-action shooter that requires less pull force.
Tips that actually help
- Fire fast and often. The shooter has no ammunition limit and rate of fire beats accuracy on four of the five screens.
- On the balloon screen, hit the balloons that reveal secondary targets behind them rather than clearing the easy ones; that is where the score separation happens.
- Aim for the volcano on the plate screen and the center of the ring toss target. Both hide multipliers that most riders never find.
- It is one of only two significant attractions here with no height requirement, so it is the natural anchor for a day with a toddler.
- Repeat visitors: the practice screen before the first real game does not count toward your score, so use it to check your shooter is firing properly. A jammed shooter can be swapped if you flag it before the ride starts.
