Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway

What it is

This is the ride that replaced The Great Movie Ride inside the Chinese Theatre in 2020, and it is the single best attraction in the park for a family that includes somebody under 38 inches. The premise is simple: you walk into a movie theater to watch a new Mickey Mouse cartoon, the screen turns out to be a doorway, and you spend five minutes inside the cartoon aboard a runaway train car driven by Goofy.

Mechanically it is a trackless ride system, the same family of technology as Rise of the Resistance. Cars move independently, swivel, back up, and split into separate paths, which means two vehicles in the same room are often watching different gags at the same moment. Disney uses that to hide the seams: the ride is a series of eight-ish set pieces, and no two ride-throughs give you the same viewing angles.

The art direction leans hard into the modern Paul Rudish cartoon shorts rather than classic 1930s Mickey, so the color is loud and the gags are fast. If you have only seen Mickey on merchandise, the tone will surprise you. It is genuinely funny in a slapstick way, and the earworm song running underneath it will be stuck in your head until dinner.

What riding it is actually like

The queue is worth walking slowly. It runs through a lobby of fake movie posters for cartoon shorts that do not exist, and the jokes in the small print are better than most of the ride. If the standby line is short you will be pushed through this in ninety seconds, which is a shame. The pre-show is a genuine animated short, about three minutes, shown standing up in a small theater.

Once you board, the beats go roughly: a runaway train sequence, a tumble into a factory, a carnival, a rainstorm and waterfall room where you will catch a light mist, then the tornado, then a dance-hall finale. The waterfall room is the prettiest thing in the ride and the easiest to miss because most people are looking at the wrong wall. Look up and left as you pass under the falls.

Seat choice matters less than on a tracked ride, but the front row of each car has the clearest sightline to the projected screens, and the back row catches more of the physical sets. If you are riding with a nervous kid, ask for the back of the second car, which spends the tornado scene further from the strobes.

Is Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway scary?

The only genuine fright risk is the tornado sequence, where the room spins, the lights strobe and the soundtrack goes loud and chaotic for about forty seconds. Toddlers who dislike sudden noise sometimes cry there and are fine by the next scene. There are no drops, no restraints beyond a lap bar, and the vehicles never leave a walking pace. Kids who handle the Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom will be untroubled here.

Scores are editorial, on a 1–5 scale, judged against what frightens a typical four- to seven-year-old rather than an adult.

Accessibility

One car per train is built to load a wheelchair or ECV directly, so you can stay seated the whole way. Ask at the entrance and a cast member will route you through the accessible queue. The pre-show cartoon runs with open captions on the screen.
