What it is

Aunt Cass Cafe is the rethemed successor to the Pacific Wharf Cafe, reopened as part of the San Fransokyo Square conversion in 2023 and named for the character who runs the cafe in Big Hero 6. The core product has not changed: soup or chili served in a hollowed sourdough bread bowl.

The sourdough is the reason this location has survived every retheme. It is proper San Francisco-style sourdough with a real crust and a genuinely sour crumb, and a bread bowl of clam chowder here is one of the few things at this park that would hold up outside it.

The retheme added Japanese-influenced items to the board alongside the originals, which broadened the menu without breaking what worked. Seating is all outdoors on the waterfront terrace, shaded in patches.

Our verdict

The bread carries it, and the bread is genuinely good. The best value lunch in the park at around $15 for something that fills you up.

What to order

The dishes this kitchen is actually known for. Menus change seasonally, so treat this as what to look for rather than a guaranteed list.

  • Clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl
  • Broccoli cheddar soup bread bowl
  • Sourdough loaf to go
  • Seasonal soup of the day

Tips for Aunt Cass Cafe

  • Order the chowder, not the salad. The bread bowl is the entire point of this location and a soup in a cup wastes the trip.
  • Buy a plain sourdough loaf to take back to your hotel. It costs a fraction of the bread bowl, it is the same bread, and it makes breakfast the next morning.
  • The terrace is shaded on the water side from mid-afternoon. Walk past the first cluster of tables to the far end for the better seats.
  • Mobile order here is fast and the pickup window is separate from the main queue.
  • Repeat visitors: the soup rotation includes items that never make it onto the outdoor menu boards. Look at the in-app menu, which is more complete.

Aunt Cass Cafe

$14.99

Aunt Cass Cafe: common questions

Is this the old Pacific Wharf Cafe?

Yes. It was rethemed as Aunt Cass Cafe when Pacific Wharf became San Fransokyo Square in 2023. The sourdough bread bowls that defined the original are still the core of the menu.

Is the sourdough actually good?

Yes — it has a real crust and a proper sour crumb rather than the soft supermarket approximation. It is the main reason to eat here rather than anywhere else in this district.

Is there indoor seating?

No. All seating is on the outdoor waterfront terrace. The far end near the water gets afternoon shade; the tables nearest the counter do not.

Are there vegetarian bread bowls?

Yes, typically a broccoli cheddar or a seasonal vegetable soup. Vegan options are limited here — the plant-based choices in this district are better at the rice bowl counter next door.
