What it is

Skipper Canteen opened in 2015 in the building beside the Jungle Cruise and it is the only restaurant at Magic Kingdom with an ambitious menu. Dishes draw on Asian, Latin American and African cooking — steamed bao, curries, a whole fried fish, slow-cooked pork shank — and they are seasoned like real food rather than theme park food.

The conceit is that the Jungle Cruise skippers run a mess hall, and the servers deliver the same pun-driven material as the ride. It is either delightful or exhausting depending on your tolerance, and unlike the ride you cannot get off after ten minutes.

There are three dining rooms: the main mess hall, a formal room set for a members' dinner, and a hidden crew room behind a bookcase. They are meaningfully different spaces and you can request one.

Our verdict

The best restaurant at Magic Kingdom and the least booked. If you eat one table-service meal in this park, this is the one worth eating.

What to order

The dishes this kitchen is actually known for. Menus change seasonally, so treat this as what to look for rather than a guaranteed list.

  • Whole fried fish
  • Steamed bao
  • Falls Family Falls chicken and rice
  • Kungaloosh chocolate cake

Tips for Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen

  • Ask for the Skipper Crew Mess Hall, the hidden room behind the bookcase. It is a real room, it is the best of the three, and cast members will usually seat you there if you ask and are willing to wait a few minutes.
  • This is the easiest table-service reservation to get at Magic Kingdom, often same-day. Guests skip it because the menu looks unfamiliar, which is precisely why it is the one to book.
  • The vegetarian options here are the best in the park and are not afterthoughts — the plant-based dishes are on the main menu rather than a separate card.
  • Order the fried fish if there are two of you. It is the most interesting plate in the park and it is meant to be picked at rather than portioned.
  • Tell your server if the puns are landing. They calibrate — some tables get the full routine and some get a straight service, and they take the cue from you.

A whole fish fried and served with sauces and rice at the Jungle Cruise-themed table-service restaurant in Adventureland.

Our take: The most interesting plate at Magic Kingdom, and the reason to book the park's most under-reserved restaurant. Order it for two and pick at it rather than treating it as a single portion.

Barbecued pork with rice and greens, one of the Asian-influenced dishes on the Skipper Canteen menu.

Our take: Seasoned like real food rather than theme park food, which is rare at Magic Kingdom. If you eat one table-service dish in this park, this or the fried fish is it.

Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen: common questions

Is Skipper Canteen hard to get a reservation for?

No — it is the easiest table service to book at Magic Kingdom, frequently available same day. The menu is more adventurous than most park restaurants, which suppresses demand and keeps availability open.

What is the hidden room at Skipper Canteen?

The Skipper Crew Mess Hall, entered through a bookcase door off the main dining room. It is one of three dining rooms and generally considered the best. Ask when you check in; you may wait a few extra minutes for a table there.

Is Skipper Canteen good for vegetarians and vegans?

It is the strongest option in the park. Plant-based dishes are on the main menu rather than a separate allergy card, and they are cooked with the same attention as everything else rather than being substitutions.

Do the servers really tell jokes like the Jungle Cruise?

Yes, the same style of scripted puns delivered in character. They read the table, though — if you would rather have a normal meal, a polite word gets you straightforward service.
