What it is

The room is built as an outdoor drive-in cinema at dusk, and the tables are the front seats of 1950s convertibles facing a large screen. A loop of vintage science fiction trailers, cartoons and interstitials plays continuously. It is dark, the ceiling has stars in it, and carhops deliver the food.

It is the best-looking dining room at Hollywood Studios and the one most worth booking for the setting alone. It is also, deliberately, a room where you do not talk much: everyone faces forward, the seating is side by side rather than across, and conversation across a car is awkward. That makes it wonderful for a family with a tired child and poor for a group who came to catch up.

The food is diner food: burgers, a decent milkshake, sandwiches, a few larger plates. It is fine. Nobody has ever booked this restaurant for the cooking and the kitchen does not pretend otherwise.

Our verdict

Book it for the room, not the food. It is the most distinctive dining space at Walt Disney World and the burger is perfectly adequate, which is the correct trade.

What to order

The dishes this kitchen is actually known for. Menus change seasonally, so treat this as what to look for rather than a guaranteed list.

  • Angus cheeseburger
  • Hand-dipped milkshakes
  • Reuben sandwich
  • Vegan burger
  • Chocolate peanut butter layered cake

Tips for Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant

  • Request a car when you check in. Not every table is a car; the back rows include standard picnic-style tables and they are a much worse experience.
  • It books out further ahead than the Brown Derby because of the room, so treat 60 days out as the real window.
  • The trailer reel runs about 45 minutes and does not repeat within a meal, so there is no bad time to arrive.
  • It is very dark. If somebody at the table needs to read a menu, ask for a light rather than using a phone torch, which the servers will bring without comment.
  • Repeat visitors: the reel has been recut over the years and now includes segments that were not in the original loop, so it is not the same forty-five minutes you saw a decade ago.

Hand-Dipped Milkshake

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant

$9.99

A hand-dipped milkshake in a rotating set of flavors, delivered to your convertible by a carhop in the darkened drive-in dining room.

Our take: A good milkshake made better by being handed to you in a car under a fake night sky. The setting is doing most of the work and that is fine.

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant: common questions

Do you have to sit in a car at Sci-Fi Dine-In?

No, and that is the catch. Some seating is at ordinary tables at the back of the room. Request a car when you check in; hosts will usually accommodate it with a short wait.

Is the food any good at Sci-Fi Dine-In?

It is competent diner food and nothing more. The burger and the milkshakes are the reliable orders. You are paying for the room, which is genuinely the best-themed dining space at Walt Disney World.

Is it too dark for young children?

It is dim but not frightening, and the screen provides constant light and distraction. Most parents find it easier than a bright loud room because children watch the trailers instead of getting restless.

How far ahead should you book?

60 days out for a dinner slot, and it goes quickly. Lunch is somewhat easier. Same-day cancellations do surface in the app, so check on the morning if you missed the window.
