Spaceship Earth
Any heightThe slow, dark, air-conditioned climb through the geodesic sphere that tells the history of human communication in about sixteen minutes.
Spaceship Earth is the ride inside the golf ball, and it is the only attraction at Walt Disney World that doubles as the park's logo. The sphere is 180 feet tall and 165 feet across, and the track spirals up the inside of it, past dioramas of Egyptian scribes, Roman road builders, medieval monks, Renaissance workshops, and the garage where personal computing got started. The ride has been narrated by several different voices since 1982 and rescored more than once; the version you ride now dates to the 2007–08 refresh with Judi Dench narrating.
Tips for Spaceship Earth
- Ride it late. The single longest line of the day forms in the first ninety minutes after opening because it is the first thing people see. By 6 PM it is often a walk-on with people already deep in World Showcase.
- Sit on the right side of the vehicle going up. Several of the tableaux — the Roman street, the print shop — are staged so the right seat gets the fuller view.
- The touchscreen on the descent registers your answers whether or not you touch it. If you want the starfield uninterrupted, turn the screen brightness down by tapping the dim option in the corner rather than fighting the glare.
- The exit dumps you into Project Tomorrow, an underrated indoor play space with free games and no wait. It is one of the better places in the park to park a restless seven-year-old for fifteen minutes.
- If the standby line snakes outside the sphere onto the paved apron, add fifteen minutes to whatever the posted wait says — that outdoor stretch moves slower than it looks.
