Disney at Christmas: your actual options at both resorts, and what they cost

The short answer

Go in the second week of November and buy one night of Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. That single recommendation covers most families: the decorations are up at both resorts by the first week of November, the holiday parades and shows are running, hotel rates and ticket prices sit near their annual floor, and the crowds that make Christmas week miserable are six weeks away.

Very Merry ran $169 to $219 per night in the 2025 season and is the strongest hard-ticket buy of the holiday period at Walt Disney World. Disney Jollywood Nights at Hollywood Studios ran $159 to $209 per night for the same cycle and is the better choice for adults without children, being an evening built around food, cocktails and live music rather than a parade. The EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays needs no ticket beyond park admission and is where the food money goes.

The Disneyland Resort sells no holiday hard-ticket party at all. Holidays at the Disneyland Resort is an overlay across both parks, included with any ticket, and it is the single best free seasonal product either company runs. If you want the holiday season without paying for it separately, that is the answer, and it is not close.

What the paid nights cost, and what they replace

Two hard-ticket nights compete at Walt Disney World and they are aimed at different parties. Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom ran $169 to $219 per night in 2025 across roughly 20 to 26 nights from early November until shortly before Christmas. Disney Jollywood Nights at Hollywood Studios ran $159 to $209 per night across a much shorter run of roughly 8 to 14 nights from mid-November to late December.

Both include park admission from an early entry time, so neither one needs a day ticket on top. Buying a full-price day ticket alongside a party ticket for the same date wastes $119 to $209 in Florida, and it is the most common way holiday budgets overrun before anyone has bought a churro.

Very Merry is the family purchase: a parade, a fireworks show, and complimentary hot chocolate and cookies at stations around the park, in a Magic Kingdom running at a fraction of daytime capacity. Jollywood Nights is the adult purchase: it runs fewer nights, prices slightly lower, and trades the parade for lounge shows and a food-and-drink offering that is priced separately on top of the ticket. Do not buy Jollywood Nights expecting Very Merry with a different name.

Neither party runs on Christmas Day or over the week between Christmas and New Year. The last Very Merry night falls before Christmas. If you are travelling in the last week of December, there is no hard-ticket event to buy at Walt Disney World, and the parks are at their annual capacity ceiling instead.

The free layer, and why Anaheim wins it

Holidays at the Disneyland Resort covers both Anaheim parks for roughly two months and costs nothing beyond the ticket. It includes ride overlays that change the attraction rather than decorating it, a holiday parade at Disneyland Park, a seasonal nighttime show, and a Festival of Holidays food event at Disney California Adventure that works the same way EPCOT's does. The resort makes no attempt to sell you a separate evening for any of it.

The EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays is Walt Disney World's equivalent and it is genuinely good, running roughly 45 days from mid-November until just before New Year's Eve. Admission is your normal EPCOT ticket; the cost is the food, at $5 to $13 per item as of July 2026, and the Candlelight Processional dining packages, which are a separate paid product that guarantees seating at a show you can otherwise queue for at no charge.

Magic Kingdom's daytime holiday layer outside the party is decoration and a castle lighting effect. It is beautiful and it is not a reason to shift dates. The decorations go up at both Florida and California parks in the first days of November, so an early-November trip gets essentially the whole visual season at off-peak prices.

The cheapest week and the week to avoid

The first two weeks of November are the best value of the entire holiday season at both resorts, and the gap is large. Decorations are installed, the parties and festivals have started, Very Merry nights sit at the bottom of their band, Orlando hotel rates are near their annual low, and crowd levels are moderate rather than punishing. The trade is that Thanksgiving decorations coexist with holiday ones and some entertainment does not begin until mid-November.

The week between Christmas and New Year is the worst value of the year at both resorts, without qualification. Ticket prices reach the top tier, hotel rates reach their annual ceiling, Lightning Lane prices reach the top of their band, park reservations and capacity closures become real risks, and the events you paid a premium to attend are over. Magic Kingdom has reached phased closure in the final two days of December in multiple recent years.

The first ten days of January are the quiet secret at the Disneyland Resort, and only there. Holidays at the Disneyland Resort runs into early or mid-January, so the overlays are still up after the crowds have gone home. Walt Disney World strips its holiday decorations in the first days of January, so the same trick does not work in Florida.

Booking order and sell-out risk

Book in this order: the party night first, the hotel second, the flights third. Very Merry and Jollywood Nights tickets have historically gone on sale in the summer for the following winter, with an annual passholder and Disney Vacation Club presale ahead of general sale. December weekend nights sell out; November midweek nights rarely do.

Candlelight Processional dining packages at EPCOT sell out further ahead than the party tickets do, particularly for the narrator names that draw a crowd. If a specific narrator is the point of the trip, that booking drives your dates.

Which resort to pick for the holidays

Pick the Disneyland Resort for the holiday season itself and Walt Disney World for a holiday party. Anaheim converts more of its parks for longer, includes all of it in the ticket, and keeps the season running into January. Orlando has the better single evening for sale and a much larger trip to build around it.

The cost difference is real and runs the other way from what people expect. A family of four buying two Very Merry tickets and two children's tickets is adding $500 to $800 before tax to a Florida trip. The same family at the Disneyland Resort adds nothing at all for the equivalent seasonal content, because there is nothing to add.

For a party of adults, Jollywood Nights at $159 to $209 per night is the most interesting product either resort runs in December, and it is the one we would defend paying for. For a family with children under eight, Very Merry at $169 to $219 per night buys a version of Magic Kingdom that does not otherwise exist, and one night of it is worth more than two ordinary days in the same week.
