What it is
Runaway Railway opened at Disneyland in January 2023 as the centerpiece of the rebuilt Mickey's Toontown, three years after the Florida version. It is a trackless dark ride: the vehicles have no visible guide, they rotate and separate and regroup, and the ride uses that freedom to make it feel like the scenery is chasing you rather than passing by.
The conceit is that you step into a cartoon short and the plot immediately derails. A picnic outing goes wrong, Goofy takes over a train, and you spend five minutes tumbling through a sequence of set pieces — a factory, a carnival, a rainstorm, a dance number — each rendered in the flat, saturated style of the modern Mickey shorts.
The important practical fact is that there is no height requirement. This is Disneyland's only genuine headliner that a three-year-old can ride, which makes it the single most valuable attraction in the park for families with preschoolers and explains why the queue behaves the way it does from mid-morning on.
What riding it is actually like
A short pre-show sets up the premise with an animated cartoon on a screen, then the screen becomes a doorway and you walk through into the ride's world. Loading is into a train car that seats several people per row; there is a wheelchair-accessible car if you ask at the entrance.
From there the ride does not stop moving. The vehicle spins to face new scenes, dance sequences erupt on all sides, a factory sequence puts you inside machinery, and a water effect suggests a flood without actually getting you wet. The projection work and the practical sets are blended well enough that it takes a couple of rides to work out which is which.
There is no drop, no lift hill, and no restraint beyond a lap bar. The whole experience runs about five minutes and is relentlessly loud and bright — the sensory load is the only reason a child might not enjoy it, and even then most do.
Is Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway scary?
Bright, fast-moving cartoon chaos with a lot of noise and one sequence in a dim factory. There are no drops and nothing threatening. The volume and the constant motion are the only things that unsettle a small number of toddlers.

Wheelchair-accessible cars are available and load from a separate position — request one at the entrance rather than at the platform. There is a standing pre-show of a few minutes before boarding.
Tips that actually help
- Do this early. It has no height requirement, which means every family in the park wants it, and it builds a substantial queue by mid-morning.
- The vehicles rotate constantly, so no seat is meaningfully better than another. Do not spend energy angling for a specific car.

- Ask for the accessible car at the entrance, not at the load platform — routing it from the platform means starting the queue over.
- This is the best pairing at Disneyland with a toddler: ride this, then let them loose in CenTOONial Park thirty seconds away while the adults take turns.
