What it is
it's a small world was built for the 1964 New York World's Fair and moved to Disneyland in 1966, where Disney built it a facade rather than tucking it into a show building. That facade — white, gold-trimmed, geometric, with a clock tower that opens on the quarter hour and parades wooden figures — is the reason the Disneyland version photographs better than any of the others.
The ride is a fourteen-minute boat trip through rooms representing regions of the world, staffed by hundreds of small audio-animatronic figures singing the same song in different languages and arrangements. Disneyland's version is longer than Magic Kingdom's and includes a finale room, added in a 2008 refurbishment, where Disney characters appear within the scenes representing their home regions.
People make jokes about it. Those people are usually the ones who have not ridden it in July at two in the afternoon, when it is a cold, dark, slow, seated fourteen minutes with the highest capacity in the park. It is the most reliable reset button Disneyland has, and it is genuinely lovely work.
What riding it is actually like
Boarding is easy — a flat boat, a low step, high capacity, and one of the few wheelchair-accessible loading positions in the park. The boats leave every few seconds and the queue outdoors moves faster than its length implies.
Inside, the rooms flow: Europe, Asia, Africa, the Pacific, Latin America, and a white-and-silver finale where everything comes together. The Disneyland version adds character figures placed into the appropriate regional scenes — spotting them is the game that keeps repeat riders engaged, and there are more than most people find.
The last stretch out of the building runs partly outdoors past the topiaries and the facade. On a hot day, coming back into the sunlight after fourteen minutes of air conditioning is the moment you realize what the ride was actually for.

Tips that actually help
- This is the best air-conditioned break in Fantasyland and it holds enormous numbers of people, so the line almost always moves.
- Ask a cast member for the accessible boat if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or ECV — it is one of very few Disneyland rides you can board without transferring.
- Watch the clock tower on the facade at quarter past the hour: it opens and a procession of wooden figures marches out. Most guests walk straight past it.
- Count the Disney characters hidden in the regional rooms. There are dozens and they are placed by region rather than at random.
- The ride gets a full overlay for part of the year, changing scenes, music, and the exterior. If you want the standard version, check what is running.
- The bench seats have no back support and the ride is fourteen minutes. If your back is a problem, sit against the boat's side wall.
