When to go
April is March's crowd problem plus a holiday, and in most years Easter lands inside it. The redeeming feature is the tail: in a year when Easter falls early, the last ten days are one of the quietest and best-priced windows on the entire calendar.
The most expensive and most crowded non-summer month, carrying the year's second-largest peak. Its saving grace is a genuine price and crowd cliff once the holiday clears.

The best food value of the four EPCOT festivals and the worst calendar — go in the opening fortnight before spring break arrives, and it is comfortably the strongest of the four for families with children.

A series of separately ticketed themed nights rather than one recurring event, and the theme is what you are actually paying for - the short ride waits are a side effect, not the product. Buy it when the night's theme is something you would pay for on its own, and never buy it as a way to skip lines.

The single decision that determines whether an April trip is good or bad is which side of Easter it sits on. Count backward from the holiday and identify the Friday before; count forward and identify the Sunday after. Everything inside that span is peak at both resorts, and the days immediately outside it on the far side are among the best of the season.
The worst possible booking is the week that straddles the holiday — arriving before it and leaving after it means paying peak rates for the entire stay while also absorbing both the run-up and the wind-down. If the dates must include the holiday, arriving on the holiday weekend itself and staying through the following week is strictly better than the reverse.
Because Easter moves, no generic April advice survives contact with a specific year. This is the one month where checking the calendar is not a formality.
April's monthly normal high of 84 describes the first half of the month better than the second. By the last two weeks, Orlando afternoons run in the upper 80s with dewpoints climbing into the 60s, and the combination behaves like a much higher number than the thermometer shows. The first afternoon thunderstorms of the season usually appear before the month ends.
The actionable change is that a midday break stops being a nice idea and starts being the thing that determines whether you get an evening. Families who ride hard from 9 AM to 5 PM in late April are done by 6 PM, and the parks are at their best after 7.
Sunscreen is the item people underpack for April specifically, because 84 degrees does not feel like a burn risk. Orlando's UV index peaks in April and May, not in July, since the summer cloud cover cuts it.
April is the festival's best month visually and its busiest operationally. The gardens are at full bloom, the topiaries have filled in, and every Outdoor Kitchen is open. It is also when the World Showcase promenade is at its least walkable, because the festival crowd and the Easter crowd occupy the same space.
The Garden Rocks concert series is the reason many locals visit, and the dining packages that come with reserved seating are the only dependable way into the later shows on a weekend. Standby for a popular act in April means committing an hour of queue before showtime.
The unhurried version of this festival is a weekday morning. Booths open later than the park does; the gardens do not.
The Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival typically wraps up in late April, which makes the month the last chance at it and the point where the resort commits to its summer layout. The final two weeks are the best time to go if the festival is the draw, because the marketplaces have shaken out their operational problems and the spring break crowd has cleared.
Festival food at Disney California Adventure is priced per item in a band comparable to EPCOT's, and the resort sells a multi-item card that pays for itself at a specific number of items — work out that number against what you actually intend to eat rather than buying it on principle. Most people who buy the card use fewer items than they planned.
Pair it with a Disneyland Park morning and cross over after lunch. Disney California Adventure is at its best in the late afternoon and evening in any season.
The Disneyland After Dark series clusters in spring, and the themed nights are the closest thing the resort offers to a low-crowd April. Attendance is capped, the event runs for several hours after regular park close, and the headliners that carry two-hour standby waits in daylight run at a fraction of that.
These sell out within hours of going on sale, and they go on sale months ahead. If a spring Disneyland trip is happening, buying the event night is the first booking to make and the hotel is the second — the reverse of how most people sequence it.
The events are not park admission on their own in the way a full day is; they are an evening product layered on top of a shorter park day. Plan the day around a late start rather than trying to do a full day and the event back to back.
