What it is
Journey of Water opened in October 2023 as the first genuinely new walkable space at EPCOT in decades. It is a landscaped trail — under an acre — that traces the water cycle from cloud to rain to river to ocean, with interactive effects at every stage. Water arcs jump when you pass your hand under them, a pool ripples away from your fingers, and a rain shelter opens and closes over your head.
It is inspired by Moana rather than being a retelling of it. There is no ride, no queue, and no show — you walk through at your own pace in ten to twenty-five minutes and stop where you like. The landscaping is the strongest new planting at Walt Disney World in years, with real elevation changes and dense tropical growth that will keep improving as it fills in.
It is at its worst at noon in July, when it is a shadeless walk through a hot garden, and at its best after dark, when the lighting design turns the whole thing over and the crowds have gone to the lagoon.
What riding it is actually like
You enter near Dreamers Point and follow a paved loop that climbs slightly and comes back down. Early on the effects are subtle — a mist curtain, a moving stream — and they get more responsive as you go. The best is a section where jets of water leap over the path in an arc you can pass your hand through and stop.
The centerpiece is a rock formation where water runs in channels that redirect when you block them. Kids figure out the mechanic in about four seconds. Adults take longer and then refuse to leave.
The finale returns water to the ocean with a broad shallow pool and a sound design that carries over the ambient park noise. There is a small amount of unavoidable spray throughout; you will not be soaked, but a phone left out in the wrong spot will get spotted.
Is Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana scary?
Entirely outdoors in daylight. The only surprises are water effects that respond to your hand and a couple of jets that fire without warning, which delights most children and annoys a few adults holding phones.
Scores are editorial, on a 1–5 scale, judged against what frightens a typical four- to seven-year-old rather than an adult.

The full path is paved and step-free with gentle grades, and every interactive element is reachable from a seated position. Surfaces get slick where water pools, and there is essentially no shade on the route.
Tips that actually help
- Go at night. The lighting and the water together are a different attraction after dark, and the daytime version is a shadeless walk in Florida sun.
- There is no queue and no capacity limit, so you can walk in during the nighttime spectacular and have most of it to yourself while the lagoon is packed.
- Bring a hand towel or accept damp sleeves. The interactive effects are meant to be touched and children will trigger every single one.
- The path is a loop, but the exit near the Imagination side is a shortcut toward the pavilions if you are heading that way. Do not backtrack out the way you came.
- This is the best place at EPCOT to let a toddler out of a stroller for twenty minutes without anyone needing to queue for anything.

Do you get wet at Journey of Water?
Lightly, and mostly on purpose. The effects respond to touch and spray a little, but there is nothing that soaks you. Expect damp hands and sleeves if you engage with everything.
Is there a queue for Journey of Water?
No. It is a walk-through trail with continuous entry, no Lightning Lane, and no capacity restrictions in normal operation.
How long does it take to walk through?
Ten minutes if you are moving, twenty-five if you have a child who wants to trigger every effect twice. Most people spend about fifteen.
Is it accessible?
Yes, fully. The path is paved, step-free, with gentle grades, and the interactive elements are usable from a seated position. Be aware that wet paving gets slippery.
