What it is
DINOSAUR ran on an enhanced motion vehicle - a jeep-style ride car mounted on a motion base that pitches, rolls and jolts independently of the track it follows. It is the same ride system Disneyland's Indiana Jones Adventure uses, and it produced a physically aggressive ride that felt far faster than it actually moved. The premise sent you back to the late Cretaceous to retrieve an Iguanodon minutes before the asteroid impact, with a rogue scientist bending the rules and a Carnotaurus hunting you the whole way.
It was loud, dark and genuinely frightening - the park's most intense attraction for its entire run, and the one most likely to produce a crying child in the unload area. It was also, for a lot of people, the best dark ride at Animal Kingdom, because the motion base did work no track alone could do.
It closed permanently on February 2, 2026. Restaurantosaurus, the quick-service restaurant across the path, closed the same day. Both closures clear ground for Tropical Americas, the new land Disney has said will open in 2027, bringing an Encanto ride-through, an Indiana Jones adventure and the village of Pueblo Esperanza.
What riding it was like
The queue ran through the Dino Institute lobby - a genuinely handsome museum space with fossil casts and a rotunda - then into a briefing theater where Dr. Grant Seeker overrode the official mission. That first theater is the last calm moment.
Vehicles launched into blackness. The ride's structure was a series of near-misses in the dark punctuated by three encounters with the Carnotaurus, each closer than the last, with the vehicle bucking and swerving between them. Roaring came from every direction and the lighting gave you fractions of a second to register what was there.
The finish was an asteroid-impact sequence with strobes and a rush back through the time tunnel, followed by an on-ride photo that captured the entire vehicle mid-flinch. Those photos are the ride's real legacy.
Is DINOSAUR scary?
The most frightening attraction Animal Kingdom ever operated, by a distance. Near-total darkness, a violently jerking vehicle, sustained loud roaring, and a Carnotaurus that lunged at the vehicle three separate times. Plenty of adults disliked it. Children who handled Haunted Mansion routinely could not handle this.
Scores are editorial, on a 1–5 scale, judged against what frightens a typical four- to seven-year-old rather than an adult.

Historical entry. All riders transferred into the vehicle, which pitched and jolted hard enough that guests with back or neck conditions were advised against it.
